Photo Of The Day: “The Wild West”

“The Wild West

Highway 15 is the last section of pavement that stood between me and Las Vegas, Nevada after driving from San Francisco, California. It is a rather desolate road, containing nothing more than the occasional abandon gas station. I saw this train track coming up and wanted to shoot it, but since the car was going about 80 miles per hour, I didn’t think I had a chance in hell of getting a sharp, non blurry shot, let alone good composition. But I did! Throw some single raw HDR processing and some Silver Efex in the mix, and it kind of looks like an old turn of the century photograph of the sparse, yet booming Wild West.

Oh and how was I able to take a clear, sharp shot at 80 mph? 1/8000 shutter speed, f/5.6, ISO 1000

  1. Good shot. Captures the essence of the great American railroad.

  2. Excellent shot! I remember once on a drive through the hinterland here, I almost had no hope of getting good scenic shots from a bouncing vehicle (no road, just rough trails), I was shooting my brother’s D80 (my camera got damaged in a fall at a waterfall), and I just shot at 1/4000 of a second, and actually came away with some good ones 🙂
